Lake Junaluska Golf Course will soon celebrate its 100th birthday. A big part of the celebration will be major changes the course.
“We want to continue to build on the 100-year history with a celebration next year,” said Lake Junaluska Chief Operating Officer Rob Huckaby on WRGC “WNC Golf Today Radio” program. “We want to connect with our community. Waynesville and this area is a great retirement community and we certainly can appeal to retirees. This is also a place with many young families that we can offer a very attractive facility to them.”
Lake Junaluska explained those changes in a Facebook page on October 9. The post said, “To Our Lake Junaluska Community,
Many of you have asked us what is taking place on some of our fairways and tees here at Lake Junaluska G.C. In one word, INVESTMENT!
Recently you witnessed a more aggressive aerification of our greens to promote good health and a preferred roll and speed to the greens. Next, we have sprayed out the broad leafs (weeds) in some fairways that have turned the grass brown for the short term. We have aerified these fairways, creating a seed bed and then seeded them with a blue grass/rye mix that should bring a more premium playing condition you will notice more next spring. We will work on the others as well.
Also, you will notice a lot more detail work being done, with new sand in the bunkers on #9 and #18, pruning and trimming of much vegetation and attention to detail around the clubhouse.
Thank you for noticing and offering your kind comments. We hope you will continue to pardon our future progress as we move forward with providing better conditions, to create a better playing experience for our golfers in the future. Drop in anytime to speak to our new Golf Professional, Charlie Carswell or Superintendent Fred Edwards to learn more and give us your thoughts!
A large portion of this work is being done by charitable giving to the course. If you would like to learn more about our vision and how you can help, contact our development department at Lake Junaluska at www.lakejunaluska.com/support or 828-454-6749.
Yours in Golf,
