David Claxton has resigned as the golf coach at Smoky Mountain High School. Claxton coached the boys team for four years and the girls team for three years.

Claxton, a retired faculty member at Western Carolina University, said he plans to spend more time with family.

Last season was a highlight as Madison Broom of the women’s team qualified for the regionals and advanced to the state tournament.

“I always told our players that you don’t have to play golf you get to play golf,” Claxton said on the “WNC Golf Radio Show” on WRGC The River. “It has been a pleasure coaching them.”

Smoky Mountain Athletic Director Adam Phillips told The Sylva Herald he would move quickly to fill the position, but it could take time. He said it is possible the men’s and women’s teams could have different coaches.
